Honoring the Rust: A Bold Typography Mural on Metal

Some walls just need a second chance.

This one had stories built into it — layers of rust, dirt, and time only partially hiding the beautiful metal beneath. After a serious round of power washing and scrubbing, we uncovered enough of the original surface to begin painting… and that’s when the real fun started.

Instead of covering the history, I decided to celebrate it.

Letting the Rust Shine

The natural patina of the metal was too good to hide. So I designed the mural to work with it — not against it. Bold typography and bright color blocking frame the exposed rust, allowing the warm tones of the wall to become part of the composition.

Abstract grapes weave through sweeping curves of golden yellows and glowing oranges, echoing the feeling of late summer. And as the sun sets across the nearby field, the sky casts soft pinks and warm orange reflections onto the metal — shifting the mural’s mood throughout the day.

Typography as Structure

Typography became the anchor for this entire piece. On a surface already rich with texture and movement, the lettering needed to feel bold enough to hold its own while being intentional enough not to overpower the rusted metal underneath.

Instead of treating the words as something separate from the artwork, I designed them as part of the architecture of the wall. The letterforms interact with the color blocking, carving out space and guiding the eye across the composition.
